Quillin Can’t Make 160 For Saturday Fight
Things were going so swimmingly, what with a high-level PR hit on the “Today” show, alongside living legend Sugar Ray Leonard on Friday morning.
That high didn’t last, though, as Peter Quillin, slated to fight WBO middleweight champ Andy Lee tomorrow (Saturday) night in Brooklyn, didn’t make weight for the contest.
Quillin, a Michigan native who resides in Manhattan, weighed 161.4 pounds at the scale on Friday afternoon. He tried to lose the weight, and got down to 160.6, a source told me, but couldn’t get to 160.
Lee retains the title, and even if Quillin wins, he does not take the crown, one which, not incidentally, he held before giving it up last year.
Quillin chose to be close to family, while his uncle was battling cancer, and with his wife, and his newborn, and put boxing somewhat on the back burner.
He was over-the-weight for an April 2013 fight as well, so it looks like, perhaps a move to 168 might be in the cards, if there are no nutritional tweaks he can make. I put in a call to trainer Eric Brown to seek comment, for the record.
