Kirkland Manager Confirms Tucker Is In, Wolfe Is Out
Undefeated with the person who knows him best as an athlete, knows best what buttons to push when, and when to lay off…yet James Kirkland is going to to spurn the undeniable, and work with someone other than Ann Wolfe for his May 2 clash against Canelo Alvarez.
As first reported Feb. 8 on Fight Saga, the Texan Kirkland has tapped Gerald Tucker, a 36 year old Las Vegas resident, to work his camp and corner come fight night.
Kirkland’s manager, the Texas attorney Mike Miller, told me that indeed, he learned that his boxer has hooked on with Tucker. He wasn’t…enthusiastic when we processed the choice.
“I’d never heard of him,” he told me. “It remains to be seen how it goes. We hope it works out.”
Miller made an analogy to the Cowboys switching coaches before the Super Bowl. Perhaps a part of him hopes that maybe Kirkland works with Tucker, feels that maybe it’s better to adhere to the “don’t fix what ain’t broke” adage, and gets back on the Wolfe train.
Miller says he always goes with what the fighter chooses as corner-persons, as it makes sense for them not to be working with someone against their will. But Miller admitted he saw and heard the blowback from all spheres, people puzzled at the Kirkland choice.
Certainly, the onus is upon Tucker now, and the stakes are immense. If Kirkland and he click and the Texan upsets the red-head, his rep goes to the moon, on a buzz rocket…
